The Quaint Basque Village of Aïnhoa

On Sunday we went to visit the quaint Basque village of Aïnoa which is only 3 kilometers from the Spanish border. We started out by visiting the church and Annie knew how to turn on the lights and start music playing inside. It was beautiful and we were able to take better pictures.

The village is nestled in the Pyrenees and is so picturesque.

Annie, Lucille,  Suzie and I did a little shopping in the village and bought some black cherry jam and pepper flavored cherry wine for the apéritif. There were many Basque artisanal products including table linens, napkins, dish towels and placemats. Beautiful things!

Next to the church is a very beautiful Basque cemetery with wonderful examples of tombstones from the 16th and 17th century. Many include the Basque cross as seen below.  Suzie and I bought earrings with the Basque cross on them.
